Electric power conservation in applying trenchless technologies of pipeline rehabilitation
Summary
Economic aspects of different technologies of water pipeline trenchless renovation are presented alongside with the determination of an optimal technology by minimum electric power consumption. As a criterion of evaluating electric power conservation in the reconstruction of pipelines with trenchless methods a concept of annual electric power conservation per unit of pipe length is introduced. During case studies the values of this parameter for different renovation technologies were calculated and compared. On the basis of the estimated data it was established that the effect of specific resistance (actual level of pipe inner surface roughness) is a determinant of power conservation in the process of water transportation by water pipelines.

The efficiency of pipeline renovation with profiled polymer pipes
Summary
Presented are the results of analytical studies of probable deflection by partial exfoliation of the polymer pipe because of elliptical form or defects of the inner surface of the old pipeline. The effect of thermal expansion on the condition of the exfoliated part of the polymer pipe after renovated pipe section commissioning was also studied. Calculated examples of probable inversed deflection of U-liner at different exfoliation lengths and different temperatures are given. Admissible values of linear damages of an old pipeline that do not result in limit deflection during trenchless renovation are determined.

Solving the problem of waste discharge of stand-alone industrial facilities
Summary
Advanced technologies of wastewater non-biological treatment with reverse osmosis are presented. Formation of concentrate in the process of reverse osmosis is a most difficult problem. The suggested technology provides for the reduction of concentrate flow to less than 1% of the total waste flow subjected to treatment (corresponding to the activated sludge flow removed to sludge beds at biological treatment facilities). Since the concentrate flow depends on the salt concentration in wastewater to be treated it is recommended to supply water with low salt concentration to the water supply system of the facilities. The comprehensive approach to the problem of reducing the discharge of industrial wastes in the environment specifies the use of membrane units for water conditioning (in boiler-houses), drinking water treatment, wastewater treatment and reuse as process water (in irrigation, in heating systems).

Investigating process flow scheme of wastewater biological treatment for the upgrade of the treatment facilities
Summary
The results of experimental investigations of the process flow scheme of wastewater biological treatment are given. The process of ammonia nitrogen removal from wastewater under low oxygen concentration conditions was studied. Kinetic functions for calculating ammonium nitrogen concentrations in treated water at bioreactor operation were determined. The technology was applied in the construction and upgrade of the treatment facilities in a number of cities and settlements of the Moscow Region.

Experience of operating wastewater treatment facilities with two-stage nitrification-denitrification flow scheme
Summary
The results of field testing pilot treatment facilities with a capacity of 12,000 m3/day with two-stage nitrification-denitrification flow scheme are presented. The results of evaluating different methods of mixed liquor mixing within denitrification zones alongside with treatment facilities design procedure are given. It is shown that the use of mechanical mixers will provide for the required oxygenic mode in denitrification zones and improve the efficiency of total nitrogen and nitrite elimination.

Specific characteristics of phosphorus removal in biological wastewater treatment
Summary
It is shown that in using chemicals for deep phosphorus removal in biological wastewater treatment or effluent polishing one must take into account the effect of added metal ions on biological treatment process. A technique is suggested for estimating chemical consumption depending on the selected flow scheme of biological and chemical treatment; adjusting factors with account of this effect are given.
