Analysis of factors producing an effect on the integrity and environmental safety of water distribution networks

Summary

The environmentally safe construction and operation of public utilities facilitates to a large extent the sustainable development of cities and communities. Pipelines of a water distribution network can be referred to the basic elements of the municipal water supply system and, as operational practice shows, are most vulnerable. Transition to market economy, reforming housing and public utilities under conditions of wear and aging of engineering life support systems of the Russian cities and communities, lack of material and financial resources for their renovation have significantly exacerbated the ecological situation in the country. Unsatisfactory condition of the water supplying pipelines in most of the cities, imperfect operation management result in numerous pipeline failures and, consequently, in material and environmental damages caused by the changing hydrogeological territorial regime, underflooding, raw wastewater discharge into water bodies and surface spills, increased soil corrosiveness etc. In that context supplying the population with sufficient amount of drinking water of the required quality and environmental safety of water use have been most urgent issues in Russia. The integrity and environmental safety have been the main requirements set to the public water supply pipelines. The results of studying the assessment and analysis of the factors effecting the integrity and environmental safety of the water distribution pipelines are presented. The assessment and analysis of the external factors (parameters, characteristics) that can produce a significant effect on both the pipe integrity and environmental safety and their efficient lifetime are the basis of developing the measures on improving the reliability of the municipal water distribution pipelines.

Hydraulic model for monitoring and control of the Tumen public water supply operation

Summary

Geographic information technologies allow facilitating significantly the task of operating the public water supply of an urban. In Tumen designing a hydraulic model of the water distribution network operation on the basis of «Zulu» program-design package has been carried out since 2006. The system is aiming at improving the quality, reliability and energy efficiency of the water supply and distribution operation. At the initial stage an integrated design scheme of the major water mains was developed. This hydraulic model provided for developing and implementing a number of important measures for the optimization of the water distribution network operation mode in Tumen. To improve the accuracy the model was further detalized by adding pipelines to every customer into the design scheme. At the same time pipeline certification started with recording results in the geographic information system. Calibration of the detailed hydraulic model was carried out on the basis of the information obtained from 530 pressure gauges installed at the residential service connections. The carried out calculations were noted for high accuracy (to 0.3 atm deviation). With the help of the detailed hydraulic model the following tasks are being accomplished in «Tumen Vodokanal» LLC: changing the operation modes of the pumping stations, planning water mains outage, determining technical possibility of connecting new objects. Basing on the calculations in 2011 a project of installing 24 pressure control valves in the water distribution network was implemented. The geographic information system is noted for the function of using map layers of tile-servers in Internet, as well as for possible data storage and failure analysis. The information obtained in the process of using the detailed hydraulic model is widely used by the distribution network operating service of «Tumen Vodokanal» LLC for the team task description and determining gate valve closure pattern.

Modeling strength properties of inner pipe protective linings

Summary

Lately polymeric spray applied protective linings have been widely used for rehabilitation of old water supply pipelines. Investigations of physical and mechanical properties of Scotchkote™ 169HB polymeric lining spray applied on the inner surface of old water pipes were carried out. In the process of experimental studies Instron 3345 electromechanical tensile testing machine and Ansys software package of finite element analysis were used. In the process of testing a stress model of two-layer pipe structure based on steel pipeline and polymeric lining the following results were drawn: maximum tensile strength of lining 14.95 MPa; flexural yield stress 13.92 MPa; maximum breaking extension 25.57 mm (~ 13%). The strength properties of a steel pipeline with perforation damage were investigated in the process of trenchless rehabilitation with the use of Scotchkote™ 169HB inner lining within the operation range of 0–50 years at 20 °С. With hole diameter enlargement over time to 20 mm the system strength criterion has the value more than 1; herewith the two-layer structure will be age-resistant while providing for the required strength properties for 50 year operation. If the hole diameter is more than 20 mm the strength criterion values less than 1 will be observed which does not ensure the required strength properties of the two-layer pipe structure. The relationships for calculating pipeline strength after the lining application as well as the model itself constructed in the system of Ansys finite element analysis are suggested. This will provide for predicting the behavior of «pipe + Scotchkote™ 169HB protective lining» two-layer structure for various pipeline operating conditions.

Regulatory support of ductile iron pipe use in Russia

Summary

The integrity and environmental safety are among basic requirements imposed to the municipal water and wastewater systems. An appropriate choice of pipe material is of primary importance for ensuring water transportation pipeline integrity. For many years steel and cast iron have been the main pipe materials used in public water supply in Russia. Lately ductile iron pipes widely used overseas and in Russia, in the Moscow water supply system, in particular, have been competing with steel (metal) pipes. The wider use of ductile iron pipes in drinking water supply until recently was restrained by the lack of the proper regulatory framework, including general lack of instructions on the use of ductile iron pipes in Construction Rules 31.13330.2012 «Water supply. Public utilities» (Revised edition of Construction rules and regulations 2.04.02-84*). The information on these pipes and on the introduction of amendments to Construction Rules 31.13330.2012 related to the use in water supply systems, and also amendments to Construction Rules 66.13330.2011 «Design, construction pressure water pipelines and sewers with the use ductile iron pipes» in relation to their use in soft and subsiding soil is presented. The amendments were approved by the Ministry of Housing and Construction of Russia and put into force on April 30, 2015.

Ensuring reliable and environmentally safe operation of pressure sewers

Summary

Surge in a pipeline is a significant factor that is affecting the environmental safety and reliability of the public wastewater disposal system. In case of an emerging surge noticeable pressure fluctuations occur that could cause pipeline burst and damage of the related hydraulic and mechanical equipment (pumps, valves etc.). It results in sewage spills, material and environmental losses. The main causes of an emerging surge in municipal pressure sewers can be as follows: mains failure, imperfections of the control schemes of the main pumping units at the sewage pumping stations. To ensure reliable operation of the pumping stations the use of hydromechanical devices as well as of high-speed emergency switching on automatic and protection devices including controlled electric drives and softstarters is provided. It was determined that in wastewater disposal practice hydromechanical fittings that reduce the surge effect shall be used. To prevent from surge water discharge through bypasses with installing safety valves and hydraulic tanks is used. In addition to wastewater discharge from pumping stations pressure sewers of intricate shape shall be equipped with air intake and relief devices at the intermediate points. It is found that surges in operation of sewage pumping stations can be eliminated by improving the reliability of external power supply by establishing truly independent power sources, designing combined power supply schemes, high-speed automatic switchover devices in 6–10 kV switchboards of big stations.

The experience of introducing TV-inspection of sewers

Summary

Sustainable operation of utility distribution systems is an essential condition of ensuring comfortable life in megacities. Integrity and long operational life are the main requirements to the different-purpose pipelines (gas and water supply, sewers etc.). Regular TV-inspections of sewer condition provide for more efficient distribution of operation and repair expenditures, reduction of emergency repairs. The practical experience of establishing a TV-inspection laboratory in «Tumen Vodokanal» LLC and the results of its activities during 2011–2013 are presented. TV-inspection is an advanced technology of evaluating technical condition of underground utility distribution pipelines and engineering structures. The efficiency of the pipeline TV-inspection method when introduced into the flow process is shown. For the entire period of operation the TV-inspection laboratory specialists have investigated more than 350 objects, i. e. more than 46 kilometers of sewers, among them 30 kilometers of newly built networks. By means of using TV-inspection the time for determining the causes and locating blockages, leaks and other sewer pipe failures is reduced. Therefore, the amount of excavating and hence the general cost of repair works is reduced. Significant improving the culture and quality of construction works is an unconditional success of the laboratory activities. During two and a half years of the laboratory operations the number of facilities approved for operation on the first try increased more than 10-fold, whereas the number of defects to be eliminated with relaying or repair of pipe sections reduced more than 20-fold.

Selection of polyethylene pipe grades for trenchless rehabilitation of water and wastewater pipelines

Summary

In the world practice different methods of trenchless rehabilitation of water and wastewater pipes are used. Selecting a method of trenchless rehabilitation is recommended solely after having compared the cost of the set of process equipment, its payback period and hydraulic characteristics of the pipeline before and after the rehabilitation. A method of substantiating the selection of polyethylene pipe grades for trenchless rehabilitation of water and wastewater pipelines is presented. The method of selecting the diameter of polyethylene pipes is as follows: for a certain pipe material the inner diameters of the pipeline under rehabilitation and pulled through polyethylene pipe are determined according to the existing standards; the ratio between the inner diameter of the pipeline of the section under rehabilitation and the outer diameter of the polyethylene pipe pulled through (by any method) should differ by only one standard size by grades; for comparison the hydraulic characteristics of the pipeline before and after the trenchless rehabilitation are determined by tables (handbooks); the cost of the process equipment, payback period and the hydraulic characteristics of the pipeline before and after the rehabilitation are compared. Thereafter the diameter of the pulled through polyethylene pipes is accepted. A comparative analysis of the hydraulic parameters for two methods of trenchless rehabilitation with the use of 160–400 mm diameter polyethylene pipes was carried out. The results of comparing the hydraulic characteristics of a pipeline in the process of rehabilitation with and without host pipe destruction are presented.

The use of ductile iron pipes in karsted areas

Summary

In providing for the integrity of water and wastewater pipelines the correct choice of pipe material is very important. For many years the main pipe materials in the public water supply systems in Russia have been steel and cast iron. Lately ductile iron pipes have competed with polymer and steel pipes. The wide use of ductile iron pipes in drinking water supply systems until later has been inhibited because of the lack of an adequate regulatory environment. Introducing amendments to Construction Rules 66.13330.2011 «Design, construction of pressure water and wastewater networks with the use of ductile iron pipes» related to the use of ductile iron pipes in karsted areas will enhance the volume of drinking water pipeline construction in difficult geological environment. The amendments have been adopted by the RF Ministry of Construction and will be put in force starting from August 5, 2017. Reducing the cost of constructing new and reconstructing the existing utility systems in karsted areas with the use ductile iron pipes is ensured by improving their life cycle, integrity, environmental safety and reducing water losses.

Problems in sewer network operation and ways of their elimination

Summary

The main problems arising during the operation of sewer networks – blockages, network deterioration and odors are highlighted. The causes of their occurrence are considered and methods of their elimination are proposed. Under the conditions of Russia blockages are most likely to occur as a result of errors in design and erection. These are violation of the pipe turnout grade, pipe diameter mismatch, turnout grade fault because of soil movement, unsatisfactory state of sewer and pipeline failure. Design and erection errors and low cultural level of the users of the sewer system can lead to the emission of high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide. Any blockage in the sewerage system is accompanied by foul odor above ground that is explained by the emission of hydrogen sulfide. By using advanced computer aids it is possible to keep account of all the factors that affect the useful life of sewers. Systematization of the obtained data and its further use provide for extending the pipe life and reduce the expenditures for renovation and maintenance of sewers. The paper is written on the basis of designing and operating the sewer networks in Saint-Petersburg.
