Hydraulic model for monitoring and control of the Tumen public water supply operation

Summary

Geographic information technologies allow facilitating significantly the task of operating the public water supply of an urban. In Tumen designing a hydraulic model of the water distribution network operation on the basis of «Zulu» program-design package has been carried out since 2006. The system is aiming at improving the quality, reliability and energy efficiency of the water supply and distribution operation. At the initial stage an integrated design scheme of the major water mains was developed. This hydraulic model provided for developing and implementing a number of important measures for the optimization of the water distribution network operation mode in Tumen. To improve the accuracy the model was further detalized by adding pipelines to every customer into the design scheme. At the same time pipeline certification started with recording results in the geographic information system. Calibration of the detailed hydraulic model was carried out on the basis of the information obtained from 530 pressure gauges installed at the residential service connections. The carried out calculations were noted for high accuracy (to 0.3 atm deviation). With the help of the detailed hydraulic model the following tasks are being accomplished in «Tumen Vodokanal» LLC: changing the operation modes of the pumping stations, planning water mains outage, determining technical possibility of connecting new objects. Basing on the calculations in 2011 a project of installing 24 pressure control valves in the water distribution network was implemented. The geographic information system is noted for the function of using map layers of tile-servers in Internet, as well as for possible data storage and failure analysis. The information obtained in the process of using the detailed hydraulic model is widely used by the distribution network operating service of «Tumen Vodokanal» LLC for the team task description and determining gate valve closure pattern.

The Initiative 7 = 2 in the Interests of Both the Consumer and the Vendor of Equipment

Summary

The world's leading pump companies constantly informed about the modernization of their products and production technologies. However, experienced users often note that pumping units started operating 20 and even 30–40 years ago are not worse, but often more reliable than modern ones. Failures and breakdowns of pumps often occur not because of defective goods, but due to inadequate linkage of units’ parameters to the system which they are integrated in, as well as due to errors in the implementation of pumping stations, pipelines, electrical equipment, automation and other components of the pumping units. The price component of pumps is unreasonably higher than their functional significance comparing with other engineering components. It is important not the pump maker's label but uninterrupted operation at reasonable costs. 7 = 2 is a program of equipment delivery with a 7-year warranty for the same price as the 2-year one. Pumps and mixers made in Taiwan are already sold in Russia on 7 = 2 terms.

Reliable operation of wastewater collection systems and ways of its improvement

Summary

Characteristics of the three constituents of a municipal wastewater collection system, i.e. structural, design and operational are presented. Their impact on the reliable operation of the entire wastewater collection system is discussed. The reasons of reliability degradation of each of the constituents are analyzed. Based on the analytical results the specific features are considered and a number of administrative and technical measures to improve the reliability of the wastewater collection system both at the design stage and in the process of operation are suggested.

The experience of introducing variable-frequency electric drives of pumping units

Summary

Regulating the rotation speed of pumping unit rotors at the pumping stations of the second and third lift of the Samara pumping-filtration station has been suggested, tried and tested. The introduction of frequency regulation mode of the pumping units operation with the use of variable-frequency electric drives provided for 29.52% reduction of the failure rate of the water mains and distribution networks compared to 2013 and 25.58% reduction compared to 2014; 23% reduction of the power consumption by the pumping units of the second lift pumping station; 15.4% reduction by the pumping units of the third lift pumping station supplying water to the customers. At that the reliability of the water supply system in whole improves owing to the reduction of the network failure rate alongside with the quality of services provided by «Samarskie Kommunal’nye Sistemy» LLC.

Calculating the capacity of a receiving tank of a sewage pumping station

Summary

Methods of designing pumping stations according to the requirements of the updated version of SNiP 2.04.03-85 – «Set of rules 32.13330.2012. Code. Sewers. Public utilities» are presented. The basic requirements of the regulatory document and pumping unit manufacturers to the design of pumping stations are considered. It has been established that to provide for correct designing the minimum effective capacity of the pumping station receiving tank with several single-type pumps meeting the requirement to the number of pump starts is necessary: it should not exceed the maximum permissible number of starts for a definite time period. It is evident that the maximum number of starts occurs when all the normal pumps are in operation except one that is operating in turns. A formula of calculating the required effective capacity of a pumping station receiving tank with several single-type normal pumps has been derived. An optimal principle of pump operation at similar pumping stations is determined, pump operation modes, their start and shutdown levels are considered. An example of calculating the effective capacity of a pumping station receiving tank is set. Possible reducing the pumping station footprint is shown. The use of the suggested formulae for calculating the effective capacity of a pumping station receiving tank with guaranteed failure-free operation of the pumping units during the entire life cycle and retaining the manufacturer’s warranty is substantiated.

Technical and economic aspects of using variable-speed drive in pump units

Summary

The introduction of variable-speed drives is considered as an integral part of the program of reducing pump unit power consumption. Power conservation can be provided both by eliminating pressure excess and by increasing average pump efficiency that can be achieved primarily by pump selection depending on the water and wastewater network operation mode. Pump efficiency depends significantly on the number of operating pumps with variable-speed drives as well as on the algorithms of their interaction with non-controlled pumps. The examples of calculating energy saving and investments for two pump units are presented. The decision on the volume of investments in variable-speed drive retrofit and pump unit upgrade shall be taken on the basis of a business project.

Economic efficiency of using pumping units with variable-speed drives at low water supply

Summary

In the process of operating pumps with variable-speed drive at low water flow rates the reduction of the pumping unit efficiency factor is observed. It is suggested to determine the amount of energy lost during the operation of such pumping units with actual efficiency factor differing from the rated one. In some instances operating with low water flow rate results in power consumption increase. In this context experimental studies on determining the pumping unit efficiency factor at different impeller speeds were carried out. The results of the studies provided for identifying the optimal operation zone where the pumping unit efficiency factor was reduced by less than 2% of the maximum value, and the less economic zone where the efficiency factor was reduced to 35% of the maximum value. To evaluate the economic efficiency and determine the optimal operation area of pumping units with variable-speed drives at low water flow rate the efficiency curves for different pump impeller speeds are required. It is appropriate to include this data in pump catalogues.
