Influence of Tear-and-Wear of Vertical Pumps on Reliability, Safety and Power Consumption of Sewerage Pumping Stations

Summary

Results of the study of influence of tear-and-wear of vertical pumps on reliability, safety and power consumption of sewerage pumping stations on the example of the Main pumping station of the Central aeration station of St. Petersburg are presented. Principal points of the methods of calculation of reliability of pumping stations operation are expounded. The methodology formalized with the use of programs for a computer can be applied for concrete calculations of reliability of such pumping stations. The safety of a wastewater disposal system, conditions of urban human environment, ground water, water basins, and profitability of the SUE St. Petersburg Vodokanal’s enterprises depend on reliability of operation of stations with a designed discharge rate of up to 1,5 mill. m3/day.

The software that provides for calculating LCC criterion depending on the pump output is placed at www.7-2.su Web site. Submersible pumps are selected as a LCC calculation object because of their wide use at the sewage pumping stations under construction or subject to upgrade.

European experience in upgrading sewers

Summary

About 15 years ago a project of upgrading the sewer system of the Usedom Island (Germany) was launched. Since the island is a health resort the incoming wastewater in sewers has been characterized by seasonal variations: in summer the amount of wastewater increases approximately twice, whereas in winter the amount of wastewater is low; however of more aggressive quality. From economic conside­rations pressure sewers were chosen. The optimum pressure in the sewers even during high season is maintained by Wilo pumping units. Reliable and continuous operation of the pumps is provided by the use of Wilo – EMUport solid particle separation system.

Methods of the monitoring of sewerage pumping stations tested at the SPS № 10 of St. Petersburg are presented. These methods allow to determine (taking into account the changes in the receiving tank – pumps – network system during the operation) technological characteristics of reliability of the pumping station operation necessary for selection of pumps and substantiation of power saving decision at reconstruction.

Method of evaluating the amount of emergency wastewater discharges into the environment

Summary

The method of evaluating the amounts of emergency discharges of wastewater into the environment caused by the overrun of wastewater inflow over the capacity of the sewage pumping stations resulted from the emergency shutdown of pumps or inflow of off-nominal wastewater flow is presented. The results of studying failure and restoration flows of the pumping equipment in the combined sewers are presented together with the algorithms of reliability assessment by analytical method and Monte-Carlo simulation method. The use of the developed method of evaluating the amounts of emergency discharges of wastewater into the environment provides for substantia­ting the solutions at the stage of project documentation development that meet the requirements of the legislative and regulatory documents in the field of water supply, wastewater disposal and environmental protection. The indicators of reliability and environmental safety (probability of flooding of the sewers transporting wastewater to the pumping stations when wastewater is discharged into the environment) variate not only depending on the failure-free performance and maintainability indicators but also depending on the state of the sewage pumping station during the initial period of operation. For this reason one of the ways of improving these indicators at sewage pumping stations is timely execution capital and regular repairs of pumps.

Mechanical Treatment of Wastewater at Sewage Pumping Stations

Summary

The most widespread methods of protection of pumping units against the ingress of large size garbage delivered to sewage pumping station with a wastewater flow are considered. An example of operation of the mechanized rake type screens RKE EKOTON® at the main sewage pumping station of the city of Seversk is made. The screens ensure the reliable removal of large size garbage from wastewater, owing to it the interrepair time of pumping unit operation increases. If before the reconstruction of the technological section 15–20 kg of garbage were removed from wastewater, after the adoption of new equipment this figure increased up to 50 kg/day. To compensate the costs of garbage evacuation the waste collected on screens is transported to the hydro-press for wringing that makes it possible to reduce it volume.

Multilevel Automated Control System of Technological Processes of Water Supply and Wastewater Disposal

Summary

The stages of creation of the multilevel automated control system of technological processes of water supply and wastewater disposal with the use of an adjustable electric drive in pumping units, microprocessor and computer hardware are considered. A brief review of principles of operation of the system’s components is done. To ensure the uninterrupted water supply and wastewater disposal JSC Seversky Vodokanal realizes the project of creation of the multilevel automated system of control over technological processes of lifting, treatment and transportation of water to consumers with subsequent wastewater disposal to the city’s treatment facilities. The implementation of the project is carried out step-by-step.

Modernization of Sewerage Pumping Stations

Summary

The experience in reconstruction and complex modernization of the sewerage pumping stations with replacement of outdated equipment and pump units, introduction of the automated systems of control of technological processes and application of energy saving technologies is summarized. The successful realization of a great number of innovative technological decisions made it possible to improve the level of organization and control of operation of the whole complex of pumping stations, to ensure the optimal conditions of their operation excluding emergency situations thereby, to reduce operating costs, to increase the service life of pump units and auxiliary equipment, to improve the reliability of their work and ecological safety.

Optimization of wastewater pumping station operation

Summary

The operation of wastewater pumping stations requires attention and understanding of the life cycle of the facilities and equipment. As a rule, the facilities put into operation and designed for the calculated amount of wastewater for a long time cannot reach the rated capacity. This is due to more efficient drinking water consumption by the population, low rate of housing development and sale on the territories served by the wastewater pumping stations, reduction and even termination of wastewater discharge by the industrial enterprises. The method of studying the operation of the wastewater pumping stations, selecting the optimal parameters of the home-made pumping units is presented. The implementation of the optimized work schedule for three units with a rated capacity of 1400, 350 and 320 m3/h provided for reducing the number of turns-on of the pumping units and 23% energy saving. At the same time the changes in the work schedule of the downstream transfer wastewater pumping station and 10–12% reduction in the power consumption were registered. The actual cost payback period was less than one year.

The main trends in the use of deodorization to control malodorous substances

Summary

Elimination of odors caused by malodorous substances at the wastewater treatment facilities is provided with the use of oxygen-containing organic substances by interaction in the air between molecules of sulfur or nitrogen compounds (with sour or fishy smell) and molecules of oxygen-containing substances. Depending upon the composition of malodorous air which contains usually up to 5–8 different compounds (hydrogen sulfide and mercapto compounds; ammonia and various amines) different combinations of aldehydes and ketones are selected. The use of various combinations of odor-blockers provides for the optimal air deodorization results. Deodorant compounds can be used only if the concentration of malodorous substances is lower than maximum permissible limits for atmospheric air. The statistic and dynamic methods of oxygen-containing organic substance molecules distribution in the air are presented. The recommendations on the use of deodorants for odor control at different public utilities (wastewater sludge mechanical dewatering facilities, pumping stations, sewers, settling tanks, ventilating systems) are given.

Specific features of hydraulic mode simulation for combined sewers

Summary

Hydraulic simulation of sewerage networks in big cities in practice involves input of large quantities of data on all the network sections including the yard ones. This complicates significantly and extends the time required for fulfilling the task. Therefore developing express-method of hydraulic simulation of transporting facilities of sewers will provide for reducing the amount of input information without reducing the accuracy of the calculation results. In order to substantiate the method experimental studies in one of the sanitation districts of Saint-Petersburg were carried out. By experiment it was stated that the use of simplified hydraulic simulation with account of only street networks (without the yard ones) resulted in 20% overestimation of the calculated flows. Herewith the express-method of calculating wastewater flows in combined sewers depending on the rainfall intensity that allows the use of hydraulic simulation with account of only street networks where virtual tanks are simulated with a capacity equal to the capacity of the yard networks connected to them has been experimentally substantiated. The method error is 2–5%.

The use of stochastic methods in determining the required capacity of regulating units in combined sewers

Summary

The flows of wastewater removed by the combined sewers are characterized by high irregularity caused by the random nature of rainfall and snow melting. One of the ways of improving the reliability of these systems is the introduction of flow regulating units. They have been designed to diverse wastewater between the sanitation districts in case of emergency or in case of the actual wastewater inflow in one of them, e. g. because of over-estimated rainfall, exceeding the actual capacity of the regulating units. The method of determining the required capacity of the flow regulating units with the use of stochastic methods was developed. By the example of the wastewater disposal system of Saint-Petersburg it was stated that the required supply of the sewage pumping station (SPS No. 6) functioning as a regulating unit between the left-bank and right-bank sanitation districts was of random nature and was distributed according to the exponential law with the increasing probability of using the modes with lower supply.

Calculating the capacity of a receiving tank of a sewage pumping station

Summary

Methods of designing pumping stations according to the requirements of the updated version of SNiP 2.04.03-85 – «Set of rules 32.13330.2012. Code. Sewers. Public utilities» are presented. The basic requirements of the regulatory document and pumping unit manufacturers to the design of pumping stations are considered. It has been established that to provide for correct designing the minimum effective capacity of the pumping station receiving tank with several single-type pumps meeting the requirement to the number of pump starts is necessary: it should not exceed the maximum permissible number of starts for a definite time period. It is evident that the maximum number of starts occurs when all the normal pumps are in operation except one that is operating in turns. A formula of calculating the required effective capacity of a pumping station receiving tank with several single-type normal pumps has been derived. An optimal principle of pump operation at similar pumping stations is determined, pump operation modes, their start and shutdown levels are conside­red. An example of calculating the effective capacity of a pumping station receiving tank is set. Possible reducing the pumping station footprint is shown. The use of the suggested formulae for calculating the effective capacity of a pumping station receiving tank with guaranteed failure-free operation of the pumping units during the entire life cycle and retai­ning the manufacturer’s warranty is substantiated.

Electric Drives for Valves with Protection against Flooding

SUMMARY

The principally new method of the protection of electric drives for valves against flooding developed by the Scientific Production Association Siberian Machine Builder Ltd. is offered. An electric drive is placed in a hermetic caisson, height of which eliminates the contact of water with the electric drive. If adjustment or setting-up of the electric drive is necessary the caisson is quickly dismantled and after completion of works it is returned to its place. To guarantee long-term operation of the caisson it is made of corrosion-proof steel. The application of this design in sewerage shifts increases many times the reliability of a mechanism of lifting-lowering of a sliding sluice gate and more than twice reduces operation costs.
