Concept of the development and upgrade of the Samara water supply and wastewater disposal systems

Summary

The information on laying down the concept of the development and upgrade of the water supply and wastewater disposal systems of Samara urban district for 2018–2047 by Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture in cooperation with the experts from «Samarskie Kommunal’nye Sistemy» LLC is presented. In the process of the concept development water supply and wastewater disposal balance flow-sheets by engineering districts were compiled alongside with the inventory of the major operating facilities of the water supply and wastewater systems, water mains and sewers that are subject to technical upgrade. The analysis of the capacity reserves of the water supply and wastewater disposal systems with the purpose of supplying water to the communities located near the boundaries of Samara urban district was carried out on the basis of the current dynamics of the total and net water supply for the past 7 years. Herewith newly-annexed perspective building sites, load distribution among the facilities, the efficiency of wash water reuse were taken into account. Measures on reducing energy consumption by the water and wastewater utilities and increasing the efficiency of the wastewater treatment facilities were developed. Possible full automation of the pumping station and water treatment plant of, the use of the Aeroport-2 settlement water treatment plant for tertiary treatment of water supplied from pumping-filtration station-2 (PFS-2); the use of filtration plants of the municipal pumping-filtration station and pumping-filtration station-3 (PFS-3) for tertiary treatment of water transported from PFS-1 and PFS-2, booster pumping stations of municipal pumping-filtration station and PFS-3 are considered.

Optimization of chemical water treatment costs in the process
of abstraction from surface water sources

Summary

The operational experience of «Samarskie Kommunal’nye Sistemy» LLC in the optimization of chemical water treatment costs in the process of water abstraction from the surface water source is presented. The Saratovskoe water reservoir has been the only water supply source of Samara urban district. Seasonal variations of water quality in the water reservoir call for the upgrade of the chemical water treatment method with the purpose of improving the efficiency of the treatment processes. To determine the optimal dosage of chemicals the process of chemical water processing in Lovibond ЕТ-750 flocculator has been being simulated at the laboratory of the water treatment plant using the required set parameters: mixing time, sedimentation time, time of passing through the facilities; mixing rate. During test coagulation the features of the generated sludge and its sedimentation rate are monitored. The results of the test coagulation provide for regulating the chemical dosages and water processing modes. The optimal dosages of chemicals determined during the test water coagulation provided for the economical efficiency 33,48% in 2016; 31,3% in 2017. A combined water treatment flow scheme with the use of two coagulant types: polyaluminum chloride in winter and less expensive aluminium sulfate in summer is introduced. Routine test coagulation with the purpose of the optimal chemical dosage depending on the water source quality provides for optimizing and planning chemical costs to ensure the water quality meeting the requirements of Sanitary Regulations and Norms 2.1.4.1074-01 «Drinking water. Hygienic requirements to the water quality in public drinking water supply systems. Quality control».

Самый большой фонтан Самары работает на оборудовании Grundfos

The history of the Samara wastewater treatment facilities project
designed by engineer V. G. Lindlei

Summary

«Drainage of Samara» project was designed by engineer V. G. Lindlei in 1907. Technical and process solutions approved in the project were at that time most advanced. Domestic, industrial wastewater and surface runoff was treated at «designated» facilities that included grit chambers and «moving screens» with a bar spacing of 5 mm. The removal of captured pollutants was completely automated. Extraction of other pollutants was supposed to execute at the «treatment facilities». For this purpose covered horizontal settling tanks with hydraulic sludge removal systems were designed. Biological wastewater treatment was to be carried out in oxidation basins (total surface area about 16 hectare) filled with feed. For wastewater transportation collectors of piriform 1400×1750 mm cross section were planned for construction. According to literary resources at those times wastewater treatment facilities were only in four cities; at that in Odessa, Kiev and Moscow they were represented by sewage fields, and the only treatment facilities with biofilters were built in Tsarskoe Selo.

Study of the processes of electrochemical synthesis of alkaline oxidizing agent – sodium ferrate

Summary

Internationally in the process of purifying industrial wastewater containing organics resistant to oxidation advanced oxidation technologies that provide for the use of oxidizing agents that possess extended oxidizing potential are gaining around. Alkaline sodium ferrate solution is one of the most active oxidizing chemicals. Laboratory studies were carried out to investigate the process of sodium ferrate production by electrolytic treatment of strong sodium hydroxide solution (30–40%) in a membrane electrolyzer with a steel anode. It is shown that in the process of 40% solution of sodium hydroxide activation in the membrane electrolyzer with the laminar steel anode for five hours (anode current density 100 А/m2, specific quantity of electricity 20.5 A.h/l) the concentration of sodium ferrate in the anolite reached 7.2 g/l. The current efficiency of sodium ferrate output changed from 0.54 during the starting period of the electroactivation treatment to 0.28 at the end of the process. It was determined experimentally that during the storage of sodium ferrate for seven days its concentration in 40% sodium hydroxide solution dropped from 7.2 to 1.8 g/l. The use of sodium ferrate, alkaline oxidizing agent possessing extended oxidizing potential in the process of industrial wastewater disruptive treatment will provide for the significant reduction of resistant to oxidation organics present in it.

Surface runoff of Samara: effect of the seasonal factors

Summary

Surface runoff is still one of the main sources of pollutants discharged into water bodies. By the example of the storm sewer system of Samara urban district the detailed qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the discharged wastewater are considered. The storm sewer of Samara receives surface runoff and drainage water from the urban territory and territory of industrial enterprises, clean surface runoff, drainage flow from heat distribution networks and process effluent generated in the process of the network maintenance. The data is presented on the assessment of the seasonal variation of the effluent quality. A representative set of indicators for monitoring purposes and diagnostics of the state of the wastewater disposal system is presented. The representative diagnostic set includes the following indicators: рН, BODfull, suspended solids, dry residue, ammonium, nitrates, nitrites, copper, aluminium, oil products. The results of the studies of interaction between the raw water quality coming to the pumping filtration station of Samara and characteristics of the surface runoff discharged upstream the same water body are cited. It is shown that the water source turbidity and color are related to certain qualitative parameters of the surface runoff. The level of this interaction is estimated; calculation dependencies are proposed. The need for the further implementation of the municipal program of the storm sewer system of Samara urban district is substantiated.

Mathematical modeling of water course pollution with surface runoff from railroad tracks

Summary

The directions of railroad tracks located in the Ryazan, Tambov, Penza, Ulyanovsk, Orenburg Regions, Mordovia, Tatarstan, and Bashkiria are considered. The parameters and characteristics of the railroad tracks of the Kuibyshev railway on the section of the Samara Region: the length of the section, number of crossings with water bodies, average crossing value per 1 km, crossed water bodies, the length of the water flow along the railroad tracks, specific combined index of river water pollution are presented. The average value of railway crossings with water bodies in the Samara Region is 0.549/km, i. e. approximately one crossing per every 500 m. Correspondingly in every 500 m surface runoff from the road track and adjacent area enters the water body from four sides. A method of mathematical modeling of surface runoff from railroad bed entering water bodies is proposed provided water bodies are located parallel to transport trunk railways in the presence and introduction of previously ignored additional pollution into water bodies. The requirement for surface runoff from railroad and water body crossings treatment is substantiated.

Surface runoff treatment from urban territories and adjacent railway utility lines

Summary

Surface runoff has been one of the main pollutants of the environment alongside with domestic and industrial wastewater. Surface runoff constituting filtrate from railway bed is highly toxic and shall be subject to special decontamination before discharge into water bodies. The studies are aiming at the development and selection of the optimal method from the point of efficiency, cost effectiveness and ease of using the technology of surface runoff treatment from residential territories of Samara and adjacent railway. The problems of purification of surface runoff from railway bed and adjacent residential territories of Samara are considered through the example of discharge into the Depovskii gully. During the study samples of wastewater were taken and analyzed to estimate the composition of pollution. Basing on the analysis results several options of surface runoff treatment with the use of different technologies are considered. The improved process flow scheme that provides for 85–90% efficiency of surface runoff treatment is proposed provided its implementation is economically feasible. The given technology shall be implemented with its upgrade to complete purification.
