Bioelectronic system of monitoring the toxicological safety of biologically treated wastewater

Summary

A comprehensive approach to monitoring the quality of effluents discharged into the Neva Bay after biological treatment at the South-West Wastewater Treatment Facilities «Vodootvedenie of Saint-Petersburg» of Saint-Petersburg Vodokanal MUE is suggested. The results of the case study carried out at the South-West Wastewater Treatment Facilities demonstrate the possibility of establishing bioelectronic systems that provide for maximum objective on-line monitoring the quality of biologically treated wastewater as an aquatic organism habitat.

Developing and implementing measures on pressure normalization in the water supply system of Tyumen city

Summary

The experience of introducing pressure regulators in the water distribution network of Tyumen city is presented. The procedure of designing the network operation parameters basing on hydraulic simulation with the use of advanced software is set. The possible efficient long-term use of pressure regulators under subzero weather conditions typical for Siberia is shown. The practical experience of the equipment installation and adjustment is laid out; the specific features of the equipment operation are considered. Based on the pipeline failure number the analysis of the efficiency of the measures on the free head normalization in the network is carried out. The installation of pressure regulators in the Tyumen water distribution network resulted in the failure rate reduction and power saving at the pumping stations.

Technical inspection of sewage pumping stations in Saint-Petersburg

Summary

Basic results of technical inspection of the pumping stations delivering wastewater to the treatment facilities are presented. In the process of inspection the following parameters are determined: the impact of physical wear of the pumps on Н–Q, h–Q, P–Q, Wуд–Q characteristics; actual schedule of wastewater inflow; probability and parametric pump reliability factors. The operation of the «feeding sewer – sewage pumping station – pressure sewer» system is analyzed. The investment efficiency of upgrading the engineering aspect of the pumping stations with account of the safety requirements in relation to the environment, reliability and energy saving during the equipment life cycle is estimated.

Biosorption membrane technology of restoring the quality of ground waters polluted with oil products

Summary

The experimental results of investigating the efficiency of oil products removal from ground waters in a biosorption membrane reactor are presented. By the example of kerosene it is shown that biosorption membrane technology provides for the complex removal of oil products, chlororganics, organophosphates as well as naturally occurring organics from ground waters at low capital and operational costs to meet the drinking water quality regulatory requirements. This fact allows specifying the biosorption membrane method as a perspective technology of restoring the quality of ground waters polluted with oil products. The procedure of designing biosorption membrane reactors is presented.

Removing oil products and detergents from surface runoff with the use of reverse osmosis systems

Summary

The studies of developing advanced technologies of surface runoff treatment from oil products and detergents are presented. The technologies are based on the process of reverse osmosis with the use of membrane units of a new type with an «open channel». Eliminating the causes of deposit formation can provide for ten-fold increase of the incoming water concentration in the units. The amount of concentrate (aqueous solution containing concentrated pollutants) is reduced to less than 1% of the initial water amount. With such small amount the concentrate is removed together with sludge. The estimations of the economic benefit of the rational utilization of surface runoff for technical purposes are presented.

Investigating an advanced method of surface runoff treatment in the city of Sochi

Summary

The results of investigating storm water treatment technologies under the conditions of Sochi are presented. A pilot treatment plant is described, the operation of the basic units – lamella settler and filters – is considered. The kinetics of surface runoff suspended solids sedimentation is investigated. The performance characteristics of the lamella module during chemical sedimentation: downward clarified water flow rate in cavities, upward flow in plate spacing, and water surface loading were determined. The efficiency of using fibrous filter for storm water treatment was theoretically substantiated and studied. The service adhesive capacity of the filter was determined. The methods of the treatment unit regeneration are suggested.

The technology of biological wastewater treatment with nitrification-denitrification at the Zelenogorsk wastewater treatment facilities

Summary

The results of introducing the technology of biological wastewater treatment with the use of nitrification-denitrification processes in the «aeration tank-secondary settling tank» system at the Zelenogorsk wastewater treatment facilities are presented. It is shown that the use of nitrification-denitrification enhance significantly the efficiency of nitrogen removal. The findings allow recommending the suggested technical solution for the introduction at other municipal wastewater treatment facilities.

Minimizing the recovery of phosphorus-containing pollutants in the process of wastewater sludge treatment

Summary

To improve the Baltic Sea basin the problem of reducing the concentration of nutrients, phosphorus in particular, in the effluents must be solved. No less important is to prevent bound phosphorus recovery in the subsequent process of activated sludge dewatering. It is shown that minimizing phosphorus recovery during sludge dewatering and preventing secondary pollution of effluents can be ensured by separate thickening of activated sludge and raw sludge; as well as by minimizing the retention time of activated sludge and raw sludge mixture before mechanical dewatering.

Specific features of sewer tunnel construction and rehabilitation in Saint-Petersburg

Summary

The basic facts about the construction of deep sewer tunnels in Saint-Petersburg are presented. The causes of gas corrosion in sewers and their structural components are considered. The methods of protecting sewer tunnels in the process of construction or rehabilitation from gas corrosion are suggested. At the stage of designing the construction of a new sewer or its rehabilitation the concentration of gases in the underroof space must be measured. On the basis of the calculation data the decision on the sewer design, elevation differences, gradient and other parameters that ensure trouble-free operation is made.
