Environmental priorities in providing water supply of Khabarovsk

Summary

Far-reaching activities on the water supply reorientation from the surface to ground sources in Khabarovsk are reported. For this purpose a water intake, water treatment facilities, pumping stations and water mains for Tungus deposit water abstraction and transportation are being constructed. The analysis of the available data shows an insignificant environmental impact of the given business activities. The construction of a ground water intake structure will not affect significantly the local flora and fauna. Here and there facilities will be provided for the formation of anthropogenically modified landscapes with improved environmental quality for the further exploitation of the natural resources on the adjacent territory.

Environmental safety and water treatment technology improvement in the Amur River Region

Summary

Advanced approaches to the water treatment processes with the use of local natural zeolites that improve the environmental safety are considered. Among the basic trends in developing water treatment technologies special attention is given to chemical free methods of the Amur water purification with the help of natural sorbents and biochemical processes activation in biofilms, water in the public systems polishing and stimulation of ground water deironing in local water treatment.

Interaction between intraformational treatment and bank filtration in the process of water treatment at the Tungus water intake facilities

Summary

In the process of choosing the best available technology of ground water treatment of the Tungus water deposit the preference was given to intraformational treatment at the artificial geochemical barriers. The hydrodynamic calculations show that after the design capacity is reached the main part of the water intake inflow will come with the surface runoff in the form of bank filtrate; thereby the evaluation of the interaction between intraformational treatment and bank filtrate is an urgent task. Various aspects of interaction and mutual effect of the two underground water treatment technologies are considered. Examples of the combined use of the two methods in Russia and abroad are presented. The assessment of the bank filtrate effect on the process parameters of the intraformational treatment is presented. For this purpose the hydraulic and hydrodynamic aspects and changes in the qualitative composition of the mixed water are analyzed.

Experimental-industrial operation of a pilot plant for intraformational ground water purification at the Tungus intake facilities

Summary

The results of experimental-industrial tests of a pilot plant for intraformational water deironing and demanganization at the Tungus ground water intake in Khabarovsk are presented. The ground waters of the Tungus deposit are characterized by high content of iron, manganese, and dissolved carbon dioxide at low pH values. The pilot plant included three operating and 14 observation wells. The positive impact of artificial recharge of the aquifer in the operation area of the intraformational water purification at high pH and dissolved oxygen levels is shown. Based on the results of the water qualitative composition analyses of the observation wells located at various distances from the operating wells a schematic view of the sedimentation area around the operating wells is given. Based on the pilot plant operation results a working draft of the intake with the intraformational purification capacity of 106,000 m3/day was designed. At present the first section of the water intake with a capacity of 25,000 m3/day has been completed.

The use of advanced technologies at the Head water treatment facilities of the Khabarovsk water supply system

Summary

A project of constructing the second stage of the Head water treatment facilities of the Khabarovsk water supply system was developed. The project was designed with an account of the specific composition of the water source pollution and with the use of advanced water treatment technologies. The water treatment complex will include the following facilities: settlers and filters, powdered activated carbon addition and ammoniation stages, an upgraded pumping station at the outlet of the treatment facilities with UV-disinfection stage, an advanced bacteriological laboratory.

Starting the exploitation of an alternative underground water source in Khabarovsk

Summary

A technical and economic comparison of the ground water treatment technologies applied in the Tungus aquifer with traditional technologies of deironing and demanganization used at the overground facilities is presented. The advantages of the geotechnologic intraformational purification method that is twice as efficient as traditional technologies are specified. The experimental-industrial operation of the pilot plant provided for the potable water quality meeting the standards without using any chemicals or constructing expensive overground treatment structures.

Designing nitrification-denitrification retrofit at the biological treatment facilities

Summary

The results of studies carried out at the Khabarovsk wastewater treatment facilities are presented. The developed process flow sheet of wastewater biological treatment included nitrification-denitrification processes to eliminate nitrogen compounds according to the set standards. The process flow sheet provided for retrofitting dephosphatation zone to ensure maximum level of phosphorus removal at the biological treatment stage in order to reduce chemical consumption at the subsequent treatment stages. The process design of the biological treatment facilities was carried out.
